A very long time ago, World Hunger Fund was accused of promoting poverty porn due to some photos we had posted from our work overseas that showed people in a less-than-happy state. Of course we wanted to address this accusation and be completely honest with people as to what our stand is on this serious topic. That is a serious matter. As an organization, we have held a two-fold response to this critique; Firstly, we will never hide the entire story from you. We will display to the world both the happiness AND the sorrows, unapologetically. Label it however you want, but we won't stop telling their story. The worst thing about showing only poverty porn is that it one-sidedly strips the humanity from the poor and makes them out to be wretched souls living in perpetual filth. But they aren't. They are so much more. The reality is that no matter how bad people have it, they still have dignity. They still laugh, they still have dreams, they still five what little they have to help others, and they still love. Their soul is similar to everyone else's. That is the difference with our portrayals and depictions; we will never show one side without showing the other. Ever.

Second, the whole purpose of poverty porn is to increase donations for exploitation-purposes, which is not really a motivation of ours'. From day one, our organization set out to be one of the highest-percentage donating charities out there, donating 100% or close to 100% of the money we receive and taking care of the administrative costs ourselves. When we first opened, our own funds were the highest percentage donars and are still a very high percentage comparatively to this day. We prioritised the end-goal of helping people rather than marketing and fund-raising, seeing that many other organizations can spend over half of their time and resources on fund raising. As we grow, the breakdown of how donated money is used may shift, but our goal is always to be high givers because we believe in our cause. Meanwhile, some charities are using 90%+ of their donations and income on marketing and administrative costs (we won't name names). We are not criticising or comparing ourselves to them, but we say all this to make it clear that our depictions of the poor that we show are not for fundraising efforts, but rather, they are for telling these beautiful people's (entire) story to the world.
